Halloween can be a lot of fun for the family but it's important to keep all members of the family safe on this spooky night. Here are some tips for keeping your dogs and cats safe.
- Keep all pets indoors. With so many people coming and going in the neighborhood, lit pumpkin scattered on the walkways and fireworks booming, outside can be a dangerous place for pets on Halloween night.
- Put the candy out of reach. Chocolate is toxic for dogs and other animals. Make sure you don't leave the candy bowl in animal reach. If you have an extra stash in the cupboard it might be good to install a child-proof latch to keep out unwanted scavengers.
- Keep lit candles up high and in proper holders. Cats can be drawn to flames and dogs wagging tails can accidentally knock them over. Putting them up out of reach and in a high sided holder will help keep your pets and your home safe.
- Pick comfortable costumes or skip them. Fido probably looks really adorable dressed up as a hot dog but is he happy? Some dogs love wearing clothes but if it's not something they enjoy it might be best to skip the costume. If you do dress them up, do the two finger test to make sure it's not too tight and sure they can walk and move around comfortably.
- Put your dog or cat in a pet safe room. With the door opening and closing all night it's best to keep the pets somewhere where they wont be able to slip out while you're not watching. Creating a safe spot for your dog can also help with firework fears.
- Make sure all pets have their ID tags and city license on. Many pets do end up getting loose and running away on Halloween. All the noise and scary costumes can make an otherwise well trained dog bolt. Having a tag and city license on them will make it much easier to get them back.
