My dog Galahad is afraid of loud noises. There are lots of training procedures and products on the market that claim to help dogs with their fears and we have been trying many things to help him. These are the things we have tried and how they have worked for us.
1. Creating a safe space. Dogs enjoy having a safe den like place to hide in. You can help your dog by creating a space that will feel safe to them. A crate or table can work well as a den. Covering the sides, while leaving the front open will give a more secure feel and help block out sound. The "den" should be placed far away from windows and outside doors. An interior hallway, laundry room or storage closet could be used. Try to make it as comfortable and relaxing as possible. You can turn on soft calming music such as classical or smooth jazz to try to block out outside noises.
Result: Galahad does much better when he has a safe space to be in. He has a crate and a space in our inside bathroom where he can hide. The quieter the space the better. When we are traveling we always bring his soft sided crate which helps him immensely when there are loud noises.
